to the VMUG Discussion Board, a communication tool for members. Please review this mesasge on how to get started, and on some etiquette suggestions. Note that only VMUG members are allowed to register.
You must register to use the board. Registered users can read, post comments, start polls, and vote in polls, and send email and private messages to other users. To become a registered user, hit the Register button at the top of the page. Then click "Please send me the form" to send an email to us - include your name in the email. After checking your VMUG membership status, we will send you an email with address of the registration form to fill out. Once completed, your are registered for use. The FAQ page can answer some additional questions you may have regarding how to use certain features.
When registering, you can use any name: real or combination. We recommend selecting real names, since other users may not recognize who you are and may not respond to your questions as a result. However, everyone's real name will be displayed in their personal memberhip profile.
One other note: the board's default setting is to NOT allow other members to send you email. If you want to receive email and answers from other members, be sure to check the button "allow registered users to send me email." Otherwise someone may not be able to contact you with an answer to your posted question.
The board has been pre-arranged into categories, with each category containing forums. Registered users can add topics in the forums and post messages under each topic.
Categories > Forums > Topics (users can add) > messages (users can add).
Use & Features
Use the discussion board to post topics, opinions, announcements, news. Use common sense to decide when to post to the discussion board for everyone to read, or use email or the private message system. Sometimes a conversation between two people is interesting for others to follow, and other times it is of little interest or benefit.
The email feature allows you to send a message to someone's email address. The discussion board software sends the message to the recipient's email address without displaying the address to you. The recipient will see your email address when the email arrives.
The private message feature allows you to send a personal message to someone's discussion board account. The message is held in the recipient's discussion board inbox until the recipient logs on to read it.
Use this feature for example to keep your message private on a computer that is monitored, shared with someone, or in a public place. The message never downloads to your computer - it resides on your discussion board account which only you have access to. There is an option in your registration setup that allows you to be notified by email when someone has sent a private message to you. The actual message is not sent, rather a notice is sent that you have a private message in your account waiting to be read.
You can save or delete any personal messages sent to your discussion board inbox just as you can with your email program.
Polls and Voting
You can add a poll by filling in the poll form at the bottom of the screen where you post a mesage to the board. Leave it blank for no polls. The board software allows a registered user to vote in each poll only once. Also, voting is totally anonymous - even the administrators don't know who voted.
If you post a message to the board, you can elect to be notified when someone posts a response to your message, or starts a new topic in a particular forum. Click "watch this topic" or "watch this forum" near the bottom of the screen for forums or topics you want notifications. The discussion board software sends a message to your email address when something new has been posted.
Avatars (your personal picture graphic) can be selected from the assortment available in the avatar galleries. After you receive notification that your registration is approved, go to your profile page and select one using the button near the bottom of the page. If you have a favorite personal image, picture, or graphic (80x80 maximum size) not in the avatar galleries, send it to the webmaster who will add it to your profile.
Sticky is an instruction or message from the board administrator or moderator that always sticks to the top of the list of topics.
Announcement can be posted by registered users, and stays at the top of the list.
Once you post a message, you can go back and edit it, but you cannot edit someone else's. You cannot delete posts, but the administrators can if you ask them to. In addition, some forums may have their own moderators assigned who have the same abilities to delete.
AOL instant Messaging. If you have an AIM name, add it to your profile. When you are logged on to iChat or AIM, your AIM icon on the VMUG board will glow to indicate to other board users that they can chat with you through AIM. This online notification is not availble with MSN or Yahoo instant messaging. Sorry, due to a bug in Firefox, the feature does not work in a Firefox browser.
